Today’s corporate world presents you with the challenge of having to create something out of almost nothing! Sometimes your boss may not even know what to do but he tells you to go and get something done! In some cases, there are superiors who know what to do and have the solutions to the challenges they are giving to you but they just want to test your ability! If they test your ability and you succeed then they give you more responsibilities and that can translate into a better position or promotion on some cases. When you are given a task, one of the things you should never say is ‘I can’t!’ you come across as negative and you send out other wrong signals.
Your superiors will always watch your reaction when you are given a task and you need to know that your attitude immediately after you are given a task can get you up the ladder in an organization or kick you out of the organization. Instead of saying you can’t do something, the first thing you need to ask is, ‘how can it be done?’ when you start asking how it can be done then you will also ask if anyone has done it before! If you ever find out that someone has done what you were told to do before, don’t hesitate to try and meet that person who has done it before.
Some of the troubles subordinates get into with their superiors can be avoided simply by talking to someone else who knows something about what they have been told to do. When you say you can’t then you are telling your boss that you get to choose what you do for the organization and what you can’t do. In a number of cases it may mean that you are not willing to take on new challenges and if you are not willing to take on new challenges you are rigid and will not be able to work in some environments!
The task ahead of you may appear very hard and daunting. I also admit that your boss could have given you a very hard task in order to punish you but you should just take it as a challenge and solve the problem! Never say ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t know what to do.’ If you work for me and you tell me you can’t do something I will just tell you ‘you are being paid to think’ and not to wait on others for instruction on what to do at every phase of your life!
I remember there was a meeting we had in one company where I once worked and the Executive Director was there with all members of staff. When it came to the turn of a lady to give report on what she had done, she could not diplomatically avoid the question or just even say that work was in progress. The irony of that moment was that she had even done what was expected of her! But she had this habit of saying she does not know what to do and she said so again even when she had done what was expected. The Executive Director got really angry for that!
Even when you don’t truly know what to do, organizations want to see you making efforts to get things done. When you make moves then people who gave you the task can help you in getting it done. No matter what happens! Never say you can’t or you don’t know what to do!
Surviving the corporate politics requires some skills and one of them is to be willing to take on new challenges! If you don’t, you are setting yourself up for a kick out!
