Have the roots [of your being] firmly and deeply planted [in Him, fixed and founded in Him], being continually built up in Him, becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and abounding and overflowing in it with thanksgiving – Colossians 2:7 AMP.
In the admonition above, we were told to be firmly rooted in Christ, abound in him and overflow with thanksgiving. How many of us are abounding or overflowing in thanksgiving? In fact, if thanksgiving were to be a class of food for human beings, many of us would be malnourished because we don’t give enough thanks to God. We are quickly consumed by the many circumstances around us and we don’t seem to realise that the things God has already taken care of us are far more than the things we expect him to take care off.
The fact that the children of Israel did not abound in thanksgiving was one major reason God decided that many of them would die in the wilderness. God, by his mighty power brought them out of Egypt. He used all sorts of plagues on the Egyptians just to have Israelites released and they forgot all of that. In the wilderness, God provided daily for his children and took care of their clothing’s such that it did not fade or become too small even though they were growing in size. Many of them did not see this. They would encounter some challenges and immediately forget all that God did for them. They would praise God briefly for the miracle of walking on dry land in the middle of red sea, miracle meals dropping every day and water gushing out of the rock. As soon as they see small trouble, they grumble and say Moses brought them into the wilderness to kill them.
Let’s not be like the Israelites who soon forget all that God did and grumble for what he has not done. Philippians 4:6 says we should be careful for nothing – this does not mean to be careless. In the Amplified version it says, ‘Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. We should remember that before we can even make petition, it is thanksgiving that gives us access to the presence of God. How can we present our needs when we don’t have access to Him yet? Psalm 100:4 says ‘enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful, and bless His name.
Thanksgiving leads us into the presence of God so anyone who abounds with thanks and overflows with praises to God can be said to be in God’s presence. From today, continually abound with thanks unto God and instead of being bitter for your situation, just overflow with praise. This is necessary because when you give God what He desires, He unfailingly takes care of your needs.
