Consistency will pay off! │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

Something happened yesterday when I honoured an invitation to be a guest on the Daytime Talk Show on Lagos Television with Ajibola Ojesola as the presenter of the show. He had only called me to come in but never told me who the other guest on the show was. I drove for more than 2 hours trying to get to the station so I was so tired when I got to the station but I decided to sleep instead of going into the station since I had an hour before the show. When I finally went in for the show, the first guest had been in the studio waiting. Immediately I opened the door it turned out to be my lecturer who taught me ‘News writing and reporting’ as a student of mass communication at the Olabisi Onabanjo University in the year 2004! I guess Mr. Lanre Akinola was as surprised as I was but I also think that the two of us were not too surprised! The only message that came to my mind was ‘consistency pays off!’

When I was his student, he knew me so well and definitely knew about my writing prowess. He also had the flair for writing and was also publishing a magazine at the time. A couple of times he invited me to write for him and I did without hesitation because all I wanted to do was just express what I had on my mind. We worked together for a while on the magazine but as soon as I entered the second year of the course we did not sustain the relationship though we still saw each other once in a while!

At that time when we both spoke and also worked together apart from being lecturer and students, we shared some dreams and talk about what ought to be and what we were going to do. When we both had to be on the same show yesterday without either of us knowing before hand, it also struck me that one of the ways you will know someone who is sincere about what he calls his vision is the fact that what he told you years ago is exactly what he will still be doing. The strategy for execution may change but the original intention will never change!

Consistency is one of the key elements that describe a true vision and when you say you have a vision but you are not consistent with it then you either did not get a vision or you do not understand the vision. I remember someone told me recently in a meeting where I was to speak that he wanted to do something and other people were asking him if he was sure of what he wanted to do. A few years later he met the same man who asked him if he was sure about it and the man asked again if he was still on the same course. When he said he was still there then the other man believed that he truly got a vision.

What I also think is the fact that when you remain consistent in life, there are platforms and opportunities you will get and those platforms will put you on the same pedestal as those who can never be regarded as your equal! There are those you look up to in one way or the other but I can tell that your consistency in life will one day bring you to the same room with them or even give you some equal opportunities with them!

You can choose what you want to do and how you want to do it but whatever you do, make sure you are going to be consistent and be so sure you can sustain what you are starting! Consistency pays off on the long run so be very consistent!
