Don’t park in the tunnel! │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

Speaking of tunnel, I used to drive through one on daily basis when going to work and it’s located in Maryland, Lagos, Nigeria. It is called the independence tunnel and it has pictures of some of the men who were at the fore front of fighting for Nigeria’s Independence and the post independence survival of the nation. Most times when I approached the tunnel there used to be a funny feeling in me because I know it’s going to get dark in there! Sometimes I don’t feel too bad about it because I know it will not last so I just go through it looking forward to the light on the other side! Sometimes when I drive through at night all I just need to do is to put on my head lamps but when I drive through in the afternoon I try the head lamps as well and they sometimes do not make much difference! You need to see my attitude here. I just said that I drive through looking forward to the light on the other side because I know that I am not in the tunnel to park! I am just driving through!

Just as I have to drive through that tunnel on daily basis to get to work you also need to remember that there are tunnels you will need to drive through in your life and once you get into those tunnels make sure you don’t get discouraged by the darkness in there and decide to park there! There are those who have gotten into very dark tunnels of their lives – it could be at work, in your marriage, in your business, with some other family members, your education or with your health. The important thing is not really about entering the tunnel but for you to note the fact that the tunnel is just a small part of the road on which you are traveling! When you enter the tunnel you are not supposed to allow the darkness in there overwhelm you and the only thing to do is to keep driving!

If you keep driving through the tunnel or keep walking through the tunnel, you will soon find yourself on the other side with very bright lights and you can continue the journey! Never park in your tunnel of sickness because you can actually get better and continue to live your life! You should not park in your tunnel of unemployment because you can really become an employer of labour with one idea in your mind rather than looking for jobs! Don’t park in your tunnel of a disintegrating marriage! One of the ways to quickly fix the marriage is not to turn back when you see the tunnel or to conclude that the tunnel holds no good and then you turn back! Keep driving through!

At some point I began to wonder and my next question was, ‘what’s the purpose of tunnels on the roads?’ When you take a good look at tunnels before entering them, you will realize that there are some people driving into the tunnel and there are people, in some cases driving right on the tunnel. For those driving in it may appear as a tunnel but for those driving above it certainly appears as a bridge! At that point you will realize that the tunnel had to be there to ease the movement of people. If the tunnel is not there the traffic in that area would be terrible and people would have to wait long hours before they can pass through to the other side. What does that tell me? It means that sometimes when we are going through tunnels in our lives, even though it is dark the tunnel is there to help us move faster with some things in our lives! To us it may not seem like we are moving at all but if the tunnel had not been there, we would have had to wait longer hours! Every tunnel may not aid your speed but I am certain that there are some tunnels in your life that have to be there in order for you to move fast in life! That’s why you must never park in the tunnel!

No matter how dark the tunnel of your life is, it is just a phase and you should never park in it! Just keep walking or running or driving! Whatever you do, just keep moving through the tunnel until you see the light at the other end! The tunnel is just a temporary phase on the road you have to travel so don’t end your journey there!
