It looks like something I have begun to hear lately is about one person or the other waiting in a worship room and suddenly someone they have known in the past shows up on the pulpit to preach. They immediately get uncomfortable and mostly storm out of the room while making statements like ‘God forbid that this one will be my pastor.’
While it may be true that you know the past of that person and you also understand how this person wrecked a lot of havoc in the world, you are still in no place to determine who can preach the word of God or who becomes a vessel for him in one way or the other.
I understand that it may be hard especially if we know the atrocities that the person committed but there are a few things running in my mind about those who make such statements because they know the past of a certain person.
There was the story of a lady who was exchanging pleasantries with a preacher just before the meeting started. They laughed so hard and talked for a while. Obviously they have known each other a very long time. When it was time for sermon and this lady realize that the person she had greeted was the preacher she just stormed out of the room.
One of the things we can first get from that scenario is for all of us to be very careful about how we live our lives. You just never can tell how far you can go in life and you don’t know who is watching you today and will be able to use today’s activities to judge what you are doing tomorrow.
If we are living a great life today then it will not be hard for people to accept the greatness in us when it manifests tomorrow. If we do not live a great life today it can be hard for people to accept our greatness tomorrow when it becomes a reality.
Now back to those who say ‘God forbid this person should be my pastor.’ The first thing you need to remember is that Jesus himself said if he is lifted up he will draw men unto him. Jesus has been lifted up already and he is drawing men unto him. He is also not looking at their past before drawing such men and women unto him. He is looking at their future and what he wants to do with them.
There is no one who does not have a past. The Prophet Moses who wrote the first five books of the Bible, who walked with God and also saw God, was a murderer before God called him to ministry and also did great signs through him. David killed many. He even killed Uriah so that he can take Bathsheba, his wife who later bore him King Solomon and God still calls him a man after my heart. Apostle Paul who is credited with more than half of the New Testament that we read and preach from today was a murderer. He was so famous as a killer than when he got born again people didn’t really trust him. The same man won many souls, facilitated the planting of churches and later said I owe no man nothing!
If that man or woman that you claim you cannot listen to has been justified by Jesus then you are even looking for trouble by speaking up against such a person. The bible says in Isaiah chapter 54:17 ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD. First we are told that tongues that rise against us will be condemned and we are also told their righteousness if form God. It is not from their past deeds or their great works so you should watch what you say about them.
Even Romans 8:1 says ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.’ So if that person has stopped walking according to the flesh you need to check your own arrogance which makes you think a certain person cannot preach to you because of their past that you know. It is pure arrogance and God resists the proud. 1 Peter 5:5-6 says ‘Likewise you younger people(and those who think some people cannot preach to them – this addition is mine), submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. 6. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.’
Please have a change of heart if you have thought someone can’t preach to you and say this to all those who think someone is not in a position to preach to them. Let us all remember that when someone even stands to preach the undiluted word of God, it is the Holy Spirit that is ministering through that person to us. So when you say you can’t listen then you are saying you can’t listen to the Holy Spirit because of the vessel he has chosen to use.
Be wise! Listen to the Holy Spirit regardless of the vessel he has chosen to use.
