Ingredients of Success 8 – Humility │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

How can you ever succeed without humility? All of the ingredients of success that I have shared are very important but they will not be complete if we do not talk about your humble ways of relating with other people. If you do not know how to be meek or modest then I can guarantee that you will never be a success! If by the stroke of a miracle you pretend and walk all the way to the top either in your company or industry or maybe life in general, you will bring yourself down when there is no humility! I have heard severally and have also quoted, ‘ability will get you to the top but character will keep you there!’

When we are talking about character I am sure you know that humility is a major part of the character we are referring to. It is very possible for you to work your way to the top in any system especially if the system is run in a very transparent way! As you work hard you earn some rewards and people will not be able to deny you those rewards! In some cases you would have to be promoted and since you have worked hard for your promotion, you will get it. One thing you should never forget is the fact that when you get to the top and you become proud you either bring yourself down or people bring you down if it looks like you are staying too long at the top!

Sometimes, being at the top is like being on top of a ladder. There are people at the bottom of the ladder who are helping you to hold the ladder so that it will not fall because the ground on which you have the ladder is not balanced! At some point if something gets into your head and you forget that there are people holding the ladder so that you will not fall then you can begin to hurl insults at those holding the ladder for you. Those who are holding the ladder for you don’t have to talk too much! If they like you so much they will give you a gentle reminder of the fact that they are the ones holding the ladder for you and hope you change the way you talk but if you don’t, you will soon find yourself on the floor.

I don’t think that you should rise to the top and fall but if anything happens and you fall from the top let it not be a result of your lack of humility! When you fall people should be willing to help you up and say that they know you well but don’t understand why bad things happen to good people.

Watch your words when you talk to other people. Be nice and courteous! Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you ever helped people in anyway let it remain between you and the person you helped! Don’t go about saying people will not be where they are today if not for the help you offered them. Remember you did not get to where you are on your own as well! Someone helped you to where you are! There is no one who can say, ‘I am self-made. Nobody helped me. I worked hard to get all that I have.’ When you hear someone talking like that then you are listening to a fool because we all received help from other people! If you got a contract that made you rich or keeps money flowing into your account regularly you should have thought about the fact that the contract could have gone to someone else! Don’t be too stupid to think that you got it because you were the most qualified or that you made the best offer! Even if you made the best offer, there are several reasons the contract could go to someone else!

If you are going to climb up in life you will need people to get there and when you forget that people helped you up then you will soon need people to help you down the ladder.

There could even be situations where something that is rightfully yours has been taken away from you. Sometimes when you decided to make noise about it you may lose out completely. One of the things you can do is to be humble in the way you also go about claiming your right even though we know it is your right!

When you are humble, you can get a lot more than you bargained for in life and when you become proud you can lose it all! Humility will definitely help you achieve more success so remain humble success lasts with humility!
