The Ideal Nigerian – Fola Daniel Adelesi, ASM

If we do not define ourselves, we stand a chance of being defined, not as who we are but as we are perceived and probably in the wrong light because our silence will allow the wrong description. For five decades we have lived as an entity with conflicting opinions outside our sovereign domain defining who we are. Poor leadership is catastrophic enough for a nation but worse still is the inability of the people to give a vivid picture of who they are, where they are coming from and where they are going to. Ours is a nation that has suffered so much from the unbridled tongues of blabbers and we have come to our defining moment.

We live in the Niger area and are referred to as Nigerians but more importantly, the ideal Nigerian stands out in the community by being HOSPITABLE, PURPOSE DRIVEN AND VALUE CONSCIOUS.
It has not only been unfair to have been described by what someone else thinks but it has been devastating to have been a victim of opinions formed by the infamous minority. At this point, the popular perception the infamous minority has earned will not count as much as our actions.
The real Nigerian is hospitable and therefore has a heart for the people in his community. He thinks about their well being and fights anything standing against their well being with everything at his disposal. The comfort of others is very important to the ideal Nigerian and the security of same is held in high esteem.

Being Purpose driven explains what, over the years, has been called hustle and bustle. To get something out of life is the aim of the ideal Nigerian and not to get something illegally from his compatriot or any other human being on the surface of the earth. He does not only speak passionately about this purpose which drives him, he also acts convincingly about the passion.

Values are embedded in the fabric of the ideal Nigerian and is disciplined enough to have what seems like a natural restraint for anything not regarded as good values. The ideal Nigerian comes across as decent, regardless of gender, refined, regardless of age and courteous, regardless of status.
Whatever detail you think about or whatever picture you want to paint about a Nigerian, it will only be the ideal Nigerian if it is about someone who is hospitable, purpose driven and value conscious.
