To last longer in your chosen endeavour | © Fola Daniel Adelesi

Long standing relevance in any field is determined by a number of things that the relevant people must have put into consideration before setting out at all. You don’t just wake up and say this is what you feel like doing and the next minute you have already started it. You should not just get a flash of inspiration for a song in your head and the next minute you are already in a studio trying to record and claiming that you were meant to be in the music industry.

It is good to have passion for something but when you finally settle for what you want to do in life, you will realize that you need much more than passion. You can see people succeeding at a venture and you also instantly develop a passion for it. If it is not what you are supposed to be doing, you will soon pack up. The passion and the success of other people is not what will sustain you in anything you do.

When passion gets you started in anything, you will need perseverance to stay on it till it works. If there is no perseverance the passion will soon be drained and you will be left with nothing. There is no one who has been truly gifted for a thing who will try to build it only on the passion. Many don’t even know what they are signing up for until they begin to see challenges. Some see the challenges and instantly run.

If you are going to last longer in your chosen endeavour, you need to start with choosing carefully. You have to ask yourself if you you want to do this because it looks nice to other people or something like that. It should not be something you want to do simply because of money. You should also never try to do something for the glamour that it presents. It has to be what you are cut out for. If you are not cut out for it you will soon be tired of doing it.

When I knew I was going to be speaking and writing, I didn’t know the kind of money that could be made from such things. I had no idea people were even getting paid to speak from the scratch. But I knew I was going to be speaking and writing. I started writing and also speaking. I was doing it when there was nothing in it for me. The first meeting where I went to speak was a meeting where my former teacher had invited me to speak. I gladly went there to speak and returned to base. He later called me and gave me two hundred naira. That’s just a little above a dollar. At the time, I was a teenager and was so happy to have that.

I have also been to meetings where the organizers agreed to pay a sum and till date they have not paid a dime. I have not stopped speaking because of that. It’s not because I don’t want the money. It’s because I don’t speak for the money. I speak because I know that’t what I am supposed to be doing. That’s my special ability and anytime I speak, so many people learn from it. People discover purpose and they continue in that line.

If you will last in a chosen field then it must be a field you have decided to go into with or without benefits. Apart from the benefits, you have to keep sharpening your skills. Never get to a point in your chosen endeavour where there is nothing to learn anymore. When there is no new innovation to introduce to what you are doing then there is a problem.

In simple terms, I will say do not go into any field because:

1. That’s what’s in vogue.

2. Someone you know is making a lot of money from it.

3. It looks prestigious.

4. You got a one time idea in that field.

Get into something because it is what you you are cut out for. Get i to it because you can withstand the challenges in that field and train for the required skills. Once you do that, you are ready to last longer than your contemporaries in that field.
