Everything, between God and man, was perfect in the first few chapters of Genesis, until the devil came into the picture. God wanted a relationship with man. It wasn’t a distant relationship that he wanted. He loved to check on man on daily basis as we saw in the Garden of Eden but we lost that fellowship as a result of sin.
God gave an instruction which was very clear to man. Eve was speaking in Genesis 3:3 and she said, “but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.” So Adam and Eve knew what the instruction and the consequence of disobedience were. But verse 4 says, ‘Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.’
So man gave in to the deceit of the devil and that was where we fell. From that moment, God began to work out a plan to restore man unto himself. All through the Old Testament after man fell in the garden of Eden, everything we did could not permanently save us from the consequences of sin and the power of death until Jesus came. When he came, he put an end to our suffering from sin permanently for those willing to embrace Him and forsake sin.
So three major things happened that warranted being raised up and they are:
We became sinners, fell short of the glory of God and became indebted to the devil – Romans 3:23 (For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God).
As a result of our sin, we had to pay the wages of sin. – Romans 6: 23 (For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.)
While waiting for the ultimate price to be paid because of our sins, man was (and those who haven’t received Christ still are) under the oppression and yoke of the devil. This is why Jesus in Mathew 11:28 – 29 says, ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’
Obviously God was not happy with the fallen state of man. That wasn’t the original plan. When God says something or he intends to do something, he will make it happen regardless of what the devil does. So God activated the master plan which was to send his son to die for us.
Jesus Christ came to save us and that means he paid the wages of our sins by going to the cross to die. I Peter 2:24 says, ‘Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.’
We were buried in sin and that gave room for oppression and frustration. The devil had a filled day and could as he pleased with us but Christ came to change that and when he had done all the needful, he said, ‘It is finished.’ – John 19:30
From that moment, all those who came to Jesus became free from the oppression of the devil. The devil can no longer harass anyone who is a true child of God who also knows his or her authority in God. This is so because Christ didn’t just die for us, he raised us up and put us in a position that is far above principalities and powers. Ephesians 2:6 says, ‘and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…’
If you are in Christ, you are no longer in that fallen state of man. You have been raised up but if you are not yet in Christ, you need to accept the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can be raised up.
