Christmas: A reminder of redemption | © Fola Daniel Adelesi

One of the major reasons we have to remember Christmas is the redemption that Jesus brought to us all. If not for the redemption of Jesus, we will all be hopeless and live in constant fear of the judgement that is waiting for us at the end of our lives.
While everyone says merry Christmas and they go all about enjoying themselves, it is very important for us to not get carried away and think that it’s just a holiday period. We should not be like every other person who sees it as the time to have fun and meet old friends or family members to eat and be merry.
This remembrance is such a powerful one and it transcends merry making. Can you imagine that the only thing Jesus came to do on earth was to redeem you and I? that meant he had to come and die.
He had and still has the power over death. He was absolutely ‘unkillable.’ We were the ones who had been condemned to death prior to the coming of Jesus. We ran from pillar to post looking for the alternative but there was none. The blood of goats and lambs could not redeem us. If we were to lay down our own lives we will not be able to come back to life and make amends for the errors we are to be punished for. But the confusion stopped when Jesus came.
You and I who had been condemned to death (for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God … for the wages of sin is death) then became free because Jesus came and took your place and my place, received our punishment of eternal condemnation and gave us life. This is why the Bible says in Romans 8:1 there is therefore now no condemnation to him to walks not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. It means that if you have taken on the new life Jesus offered you, you condemnation is taken away and now you have life.
The primary responsibility of Jesus was to take us from the kingdom of darkness and bring us into the kingdom of light. Even though that cost him his life, he still did. He redeemed us from the curse of sin and death. He redeemed us from generational and financial curses. He set us free from every kind of curse and brought us into eternal joy of salvation.
If we are to get involved in any merry making, the more important one is the merry making about the redemption that we got as a result of the death of Jesus. So many have been carried away by the jamboree of the world and they think more of Christmas as a season to have fun, eat a lot and travel as often as possible.
Even though some people say that Jesus is the reason for the season, they hardly reckon with the deep truth of that statement more than they associate with the rhyme that it provides. This significant period is too important to just see it as a period of fun and merry making. It is a serious period of appreciation for those whose lives have been redeemed and that of sober reflection to those who are yet to be redeemed.
If you are yet to be redeemed (by that I mean you have not confessed Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal saviour) then you are having a merry Christmas defined by food, drinking and traveling. You need to go beyond that. The greatest thing that can make this Christmas merry is the salvation of your soul.
In case you have not been redeemed, please say ‘Dear Lord Jesus, you are the redeemer of the world. Please come and save me. I confess that you are my Lord and personal Saviour. I believe you took my place and died for me on the cross. Thank you for this great sacrifice. I accept it and I will, from today, follow you for the rest of my life. Hallelujah! I am saved.
Please join a local church near you where the undiluted word of God is being preached and making heaven is part of the vision of the church. God bless and please remain a redeemed child of God until Jesus, our Lord comes back for all of us.
