It’s time to go forward | © Fola Daniel Adelesi

Back at Horeb, God, our God, spoke to us: “You’ve stayed long enough at this mountain. On your way now. Get moving… Deut. 1:6-7 (MSG).
When you read the verses preceding verses 6 and 7 of Deuteronomy 1, you will understand that the children of Israel had been on a journey for a while. Verse 3 actually says it was their fortieth year. So you know it has been a pretty long journey.
That was not how God wanted it to be but so many things happened. God knew they would turn back if he had taken them through a shorter route to the promise land. While in the wilderness, the children of Israel also grumbled and disobeyed but he kept leading them.
Now at a new phase, God had to tell them that they had been on the same spot long enough. He instructed them to go forward. If God will come to a person or a nation to say that the person has been in a place long enough, then you should know the person is long overdue for progress.
For the children of Israel to be sure that God didn’t just want to remind them of how long they had been in a particular mountain, he followed up the statement with an instruction asking them to go forward. He also specified where they should go.
I think it is also very important for us to go back to see why the children of Israel had difficulties going forward. In the book of Number 13:33, the people who went to spy the promise land came back with this report:
“There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so were we in their sight.”
This verse explains why the people could not move forward even though God had made a way for them. They saw giants even though God had given them the power to overcome the giants. They didn’t know that the giants they saw were actually afraid of them.
God had to come back to tell them that he had given them the land and that they should contend with the inhabitants in battle. If God is asking you to fight a battle then you should know that he has given you victory already.
God is also asking you to move forward this year. So why are you still scared about going forward? Are you still seeing the giants that God has given you the power to defeat? If God says you should go forward then you must go forward.
Be confident in the fact that the God who is asking you to go forward has first made a room for you in a new place. He will not ask you to go forward and then put you to shame.
Once God has said go forward, your progress is no longer in God’s hands. It is absolutely left to you to take that step of faith and watch what happens right in front of you. For the children of Israel, as they managed to obey God while in the wilderness, they eventually conquered all the inhabitants of the land despite looking like giants.
Don’t focus on the obstacles. Focus on the God that is bigger than any obstacle imaginable and you will go forward in Jesus name.
