So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. “Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. “Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.” Joshua 1:16 18
As I read those lines that came from the people of Israel to Joshua who had just been appointed and anointed by God for the purpose of taking them into the promised land, there was only one thing that came into my mind. Those verses proved that when God calls a man He will definitely give him the authority that backs up his calling. Joshua in this case was given the assurance that he would be obeyed and he was also told that whoever rebels his command would also be put to death!
In one of the series written earlier I said, if God has called you then you have nothing to worry about. This is one of the things that gives people who are called a serious headache. Sometimes they worry about how people will ever listen to them. They are so concerned about being able to control the people they have been called to lead and they are just wondering how things will ever work out. Some people who have been called into leadership are people who have hardly spoken in public and you may also be thinking, oh, I barely speak in public and apart from that, I am just a very young person and all the people I have to lead are people who are older than I am.
When Joshua was called he was also a very young person and also had to lead people who were older than him. The interesting thing was that they gave him the guarantee that they were going to listen to him even before he started doing anything serious in his assignment. When you have truly received a calling from God in a field then you have nothing to worry about because the God who has called you has also given you the authority to back up your calling.
Wherever you will need to stand up and speak to people you already have the authority that will make people yield to you. When you have to instruct people, God has already given you the authority. If you have to negotiate with people, there is no need to be afraid because you received an authority as soon as you received the calling from God.
It would not have been fair if God gave you an assignment and expected that people will listen to you without giving you the grace that will make people to naturally listen to you! People can be very difficult. I have seen a number of leaders struggling to speak to their followers or trying hard to make them follow. All you need to do is to be sure that you are doing what you are called to do and once that is settled, you should not be struggling to speak to people or struggling to get things done. In my few years of experience as a leader, I have seen authority working for me. Whenever I am given a position, I also get the necessary authority to make my work easy. Imagine that I preside over a body that needs to execute projects and I cannot approve funds! That would be very frustrating for me no matter the colour they may have given the position
Once you have settled into the right place of calling, God has given you the needed authority but I must warn that you need to be very careful when acting with your God-given authority. Never get drunk and abuse it. If you use it too often and indiscriminately you will use it up too quickly. When you use Gods authority carefully he refills the authority but if you abuse it, God has no obligation to refill the authority. When you authority is not refilled, that is the beginning of failure for a lot of people! Use your authority wisely
