Today’s Christmas: Santa Claus versus Jesus Christ │© Fola Daniel Adelesi

The days are rolling by quickly and another Christmas is here again. Rather than just visiting all the malls in town and eating all that we can lay our hands on, which is not wrong, I think it is also time for us to reflect on the more important thing – the reason for the season.
Last year I wrote an article titled ‘What makes a Christmas merry?’ which you can find on and I can’t stay away from reminding some people and opening to others that the reason for the season is more important than all the noise and fun we seek during the season.
Have you ever imagined how nice it will be for all the fun seekers during the Christmas season to be genuinely born again and changing the world for good? Something struck my mind as I thought about what to write for this Christmas. It was a great but sad story about how Jesus concluded his earthly ministry as documented in the Bible.
The story under review can be found in Mathew chapter 27 from verse 15.  Here’s it:
‘15 Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection. 16 And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas. 17 So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ? 18 For he saw that for envy they had given him up. 19 And while he was on the judge’s seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him. 20 Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death. 21 But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.’ – Bible In Basic English version.
That text is simple enough for anyone to understand. The world at that time chose Barabbas and requested that Jesus be killed. If you read further in your Bible, they said they would take the responsibility for his blood and that it will also be on their children!
This story, as popular as it is, struck me again when I realized how many have made the Christmas a season about Santa Claus rather than Jesus Christ! We are gradually repeating history. So many have gone ahead to use the word ‘xmas’ not because they really needed to shorten it but because they do not want to associate with Christ. Some others have taken further in their amusing but foolish intelligence by referring strictly to it as the ‘holidays.’ We all know this is not about a holiday or Santa Claus. We know it is about Jesus! Why then have we made the other mundane things more important?
Even those who profess to be Christians don’t seem to have made it any better! Remember that Apostle Paul says he is not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ and I think so many people are today! We want to blend and flow with the world so we take of Christ just as they do and fit in when they are around.
The most popular sites, malls, parks, beaches, airports and other public places are now filled with pictures of Santa Claus in red carrying gifts and some have trees we call Christmas trees. Here are a few significant things about the Santa Claus in red and the trees:
1. Several people paraded as Messiah but Jesus is the ONLY messiah.
2. Santa Claus wears red and the blood of Jesus which was shed on the cross is red. The blood of goats and other animals did not suffice so Jesus had to come!
3. We place trees all around today and the cross on which Jesus died is actually a tree!
I call these things significant because we have everything around us pointing back to Jesus but we, in this present dispensation keep asking for Santa Claus rather than Jesus. It may not be the physical Santa Claus but some other type. What kind of Santa’s been holding you back from the real savior or taking your eyes off Jesus?
Let’s be real and face it! Santa Claus may be winning right now but it is about Jesus Christ and your Santa will not be able to help you when Jesus sits to Judge as he will in the last days! Will you keep on with Santa Claus or Jesus Christ?
